Shelling in Sanibel

We spent 3 nights in a perfect campground by Miami.
Then we drove to the west coast of Florida. In one of our tours last week we met a lady that collects shells and she recommended Sanibel island as a good shelling location. We read about shelling in the internet and learned that the best time to go would be 6am, with low tide. So we woke up very early today to be there in time. When we got there, it was still dark because the sun rises only at 6:30. We had breakfast and headed to the beach.
The beach was filled with a great amount shells and conchs in all shapes, colors and sizes.
All you can eat buffet...
A bird "bem diferente", can anyone tell what's the name of this one?
and another one...
And this is our crop for today. All the shells collected are allowed to take home by the state of Florida law. It is only prohibited to take live seashells.

Wow - what a great morning you had!! I love the beach in the morning for a nice jog. :-) No idea about the bird though.....maybe Bruce will know.

Okay - do I get the prize for the day for naming the bird? I googled it on images....it is a Black Skimmer (native to Florida).

Looks fantastic. I want to go visit you right now!
But can not leave right now since we are having the Sieleman dinner tonight. Miss you all!

Maybe a really stupid question...but how do you know if the shell is alive or not?

Good job Cathy!! how exactly did you google the image?? We will work a reward for you.... maybe something like snowy Xmas?

Gitte - you cannot imagine what we will give to be with you in a Sieleman dinner tonight! please have one glass of wine for us as well.
as for the shells - live shells have a resident inside (kind of a snail) and you can see it clearly from the outside.

I believe a snowy Christmas is pretty much a guarantee....now if you could make it a 30 degree C Christmas I would like that reward!!!! :-)

Cathy, I know a place where the 30 C is guaranteed - POA. Now you only need the tickets.

HI all,
Let`s vote for a quorum to call it Sielmas dinner or not, what about 8 out of 12 should be there otherwise it`s not a Sieleman Dinner????? We can only look at the pictures but never participate.....Still i hope you guys had a very nice dinner and enjoyed having Jim around!
We are almost all recovered from the flu and will have our own dinner......Beijos, Augusta
